An Inherited Grief

As I hold myself, I hold them too—
The people I came from and the people they came through.

What I allow through,
I do with support.
I let it come,
Like waves of the sea,
Made of the tears of the people that came before me.

I am their echo.
I am because they were.
What they lived, lives on in me.
I decide how to let their pain free.
